It’s been a bit… Long time no update from the singing drummer site. Truth is, it’s not due to being lazy. I’ve been busy, but not on this site 🙁
A month or so ago I spoke with Mark Tirabassi over at Cardinal Percussion about trying some new heads out. I’ve been playing the ProFlex 1 (well, in the olden days they were just Medium Single Ply Clears) for about 10 years and loved them. I was playing them long before I was fortunate enough to get on their roster. I loved those heads on my toms!!
Anyway, I asked Mark if he had any suggestions for some new heads. I wanted a change. He asked some questions and said it sounded like I needed to try out the Tone Ridge heads. They are a double ply head with, get this, something like an embossed ridge around the outer edge of the head. Like where you would put a tone ring.
I took his advice and ordered a set of Tone Ridge heads for my toms, plus some new snare heads. I wanted to give them a try. You can catch a video of me trying out the snare heads here. I tried out the Rev Dot, and it is AWESOME. It has quickly replaced my go to snare head. Check the video here.
Well, my buddy Tom Van Riper, of Lost Studios, here in Portland OR, saw the videos and gave me a call. Turns out, he’s been looking for a change too.
I told him about the Tone Ridge heads that I got, but I hadn’t had a chance to try them, but was super excited about them. I guess my excitement was catchy because he up and ordered a set for his studio kit.
Due to my never-ending remodel, I hadn’t had a chance to shoot a video of the change over to the new Tone Ridge. It took me so long that Tom got his changed out before I did.
Guess what?
He LOVES them!! So much so he has told another studio he works closely with, and they are in process of ordering too.
AND both studios want to test out the new Orbit kick head from Attack too. These guys will probably get to try them out before me!! Haha, all good. Great tone, great Attack, great price, just great heads!
So, on top of turning folks on to some great heads, I’ve also been playing some shows with Madwagon. In fact, we are playing a couple shows with a great band called The Adarna, from Seattle. Check out our next show with them coming up on August 23rd, in Vancouver WA.
I also actually tried recording some singing drum covers. But, with the basement studio in disarray, it was hopeless 🙁
